Duke University and Duke University Health System each earned a spot on “America’s Best Employers 2021” list by Forbes, which released the rankings on Tuesday.

Duke University placed 23rd and Duke University Health System ranked 142nd out of 500 employers with more than 5,000 employees in the annual ranking.

“As the past year has reinforced, our faculty and staff are some of the most talented and dedicated people in the country,” said Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president of Duke administration. “Recognition like this helps to highlight the incredible efforts by our colleagues that contribute to Duke’s record of exemplary education, research and patient care.”

Forbes worked with online statistics partner Statista to survey about 38,000 employees working for companies that employ at least 1,000 in the U.S.

Survey participants were asked questions about work-related topics such as working conditions, salary, potential for development and company image regarding their current employer. They were asked how willing they would be to recommend their employers to friends and family. Participants were also prompted to evaluate other employers in respective industries that stood out either positively or negatively.

The survey was conducted on companies from 25 industry sectors, including government services.

In 2020, Forbes recognized Duke among the “Best Employers for Diversity” and “Best Employers for Women.”
