'Setting An Example': Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley 'Restricting Personal Movements' After Possibly Exposed To COVID-19

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said he has possibly been exposed to COVID-19 and will be "restricting personal movements."

He told city council members and department heads Tuesday morning he was doing this after possible exposure to a person who is being tested for the coronavirus.

Results for the testing of that person will take about five days, he said.

CORONAVIRUS COVERAGE:

Buckley has no symptoms and has not been tested himself, but he was alerted to the possible exposure late Monday afternoon.

"I am working from home, continuing to do City business through telework and virtual meetings," Buckley said.

The mayor has canceled his public appearances for the rest of the week.

Buckley spoke with WJZ's Nicole Baker Tuesday in a video interview. He said he wants to make sure he's taking proper precautions.

"More of this is about setting an example," he said. "I think the more of us that take precautions and do the right thing, flatten the curve and work toward getting to the other side of it, the better off we're going to be."

For now, the mayor is not planning to be tested for COVID-19.

"If it's necessary for me to be tested, I will. I mean we're all very mindful of not taking a test away from someone who really needs it," he said.

Buckley also thanked county and state leaders for doing a "great job" preparing for the pandemic.

He also urged people to stay informed about the latest developments in the virus's spread.

"This is not the zombie apocalypse; we will survive, we'll come through the other side and we'll be stronger for it. Don't lose hope; work together and then come have a beer with me on the other end," he said with a laugh.
