When it comes to the essentials of running a business, our Cornerstone member Vulcan Materials gets it. As a leading producer of construction aggregates (crushed stone, sand and gravel), Vulcan is mining and selling the physical essentials that empower construction and infrastructure across the country. But there’s another essential that matters to Vulcan: their people.

With 22 facilities in North Carolina employing over 500 people, Vulcan is familiar with the workforce challenges facing businesses in our state. That’s why they’re investing in the communities they serve and preparing students and the leaders of tomorrow for success. From student scholarships, internships, and apprenticeships to hands-on learning experiences like the Fred Webb Outdoor Geology Laboratory at Appalachian State University and learning centers at their own facilities, Vulcan is hard at work showcasing the limitless opportunities available in the skilled trades.

In addition to these key investments, Vulcan knows that there’s another critical factor in building a strong talent pipeline: diversity. In the words of Chairman, President and CEO Tom Hill: “Diversity and inclusion is important to Vulcan’s future. Our vision is a diverse and inclusive culture that fosters a positive work environment that enables us to attract, grow and retain the best talent.”

Vulcan’s new partnership with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is a powerful step in the right direction towards intentionally building a diverse and inclusive workforce. Earlier this year, the company announced a $500,000 grant initiative that will support scholarships and internships for students who win “pitch competitions,” capital improvements for student workspaces in colleges, and more. North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro is one of six HBCUs chosen to participate in the program, which was announced in conjunction with the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Fostering a culture of belonging and ensuring that all employees’ experiences and perspectives are welcomed and valued will continue to be the keys to attracting and retaining the most talented people for your business. Vulcan has demonstrated their commitment to building a diverse and skilled talent pipeline in North Carolina and we’re proud to call them a Cornerstone member.
