Introduction – The AASHTO Transportation System Preservation Technical Services Program (TSP-2) through its Local Agency Outreach National Working Group would like to survey agencies on how they prioritize preservation for locally owned bridges.  The intent of this survey is to identify both trends and candidates for follow up interviews based on current practices.

The term “Bridge Preservation” is sometimes referred to as “Bridge Maintenance”.  Bridge Preservation is defined as “actions or strategies that prevent, delay, or reduce deterioration of bridges or bridge elements; restore the function of existing bridges; keep bridges in good or fair condition; and extend their service life. Preservation actions may be cyclic or condition-driven”.

Typical bridge preservation/maintenance activities are

·        Bridge cleaning/washing,

·        Concrete sealing,

·        Applying overlays

·        Joint repairs/cleaning

·        Bearing maintenance/lubrication

·        Spot/Zone or full painting of bridge elements

·        Concrete or Steel Repairs

·        Scour and Pile Repairs/Mitigation
