Info for the next event coming soon!

What is E101?

E101 is a free training series offered by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Compliance and Technical Assistance Program (CTAP) staff designed to educate individuals in charge of managing environmental responsibilities at Indiana businesses but are open to anyone interested in the subject matter. The goals of this training series are to assist environmental managers in understanding current state and federal environmental regulations, determine how the regulations apply to Indiana businesses, and demonstrate how to implement practices that strengthen environmental compliance and sustainability efforts.

To date, a number of E101 events have been conducted on topics of Air, Land and Water. Below, you will find the topics addressed, accompanied by presentation slides and manuals, and most recently, recorded video of the training sessions.

The information in these modules has recently been reviewed and edited to incorporate regulatory changes; however, as regulations continue to change, portions of the training materials may get outdated. For specific questions, it is always recommended to consult the Indiana Code (IC), the Indiana Administrative Code (IAC) or to contact the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) specific program areas. CTAP will make note of any regulatory changes that occur between versions and provide that information separately until such time the module is edited again.

Farm operations handle a variety of chemicals and other materials safely each year. That management can include pesticides, fertilizers, fuels, oils as well as natural items such as manure and crop residues. Proper management practices can reduce the probability of spills. However, spills will occur despite the best of management practices. Are you prepared and know what to do when a spill occurs?

Indiana Department of Environmental Management staff from the Emergency Response Section, Office of Indiana State Chemist, Indiana Department of Homeland Security, and other experts discuss spill-related topics including preplanning, event response and risk management.

In addition, you will learn how your TRI data can assist you in discovering pollution prevention opportunities for your facility.

Discharges of stormwater from certain industrial and construction activities are subject to environmental permitting requirements. In this training you will learn who is subject to stormwater permit, and how to apply for a stormwater permit. In addition, stormwater associated Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s) will be discussed in relation to construction stormwater. Also, upcoming changes in stormwater regulations will be discussed.

Used Oil Management - Generator Responsibilities

A wide variety of businesses generate used oil. Those businesses handle used oil through commercial or industrial operations or from the maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Used oil generators are the largest segment of the used oil industry. Indiana adopted the “Used Oil Management” Rule at 329 IAC 13 to encourage used oil recycling.

E201 Waste Determinations - Beyond Basics

Welcome to IDEM’s advanced training in the E101 Series on Waste Determinations. This course will cover waste determination basics for many regulatory programs and delve into details for hazardous waste determinations.

Making a waste determination is the critical first step in determining the regulatory status and ensuring proper waste management.  A wide variety of businesses generate wastes.  Waste management facilities such as landfills, processing facilities, and treatment, storage, disposal facilities (TSDFs) are required to accept wastes in accordance with Indiana’s Solid and Hazardous Waste regulations.
