In 2021, having dependable access to the internet is no longer a luxury, but instead an essential public health, financial and educational tool. The ability to search for safe housing, apply for a job or public services, complete schoolwork and manage household finances hinges on the availability of a reliable internet connection. In the age of COVID-19, when we adapted to online classrooms, doctor offices and workplaces to promote public safety, the disproportionate impact on the roughly 800,000 Pennsylvanians without internet access cannot be overlooked.
However, with the passage of HB 2071 and the additional investments to come to correct these disparities, I am hopeful that the work can begin to ensure no one is limited by their inability to secure affordable and accessible internet services.
