As a retired member of the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department, one of my top priorities as State Representative has been to help support and strengthen our emergency response system. This includes finding ways to support our EMTs and medical emergency providers, and I am always excited to visit and talk with our heroes at Medical Rescue Team South (MRTSA). They are hosting an Open House next Saturday and we will be there with them!
Medical Rescue Team South Authority Open House
Saturday, May 21st 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
315 Cypress Way, Pittsburgh, PA 15228
MRTSA’s Open House will feature an opportunity to see their updated station, get a look at their vehicles, and learn more about their response capabilities. There will be food trucks, raffle baskets, gift baskets, a kids’ station, hands-only CPR, and CJ the Therapy dog! Our office will be there with a table of state resources as well.
Additionally, we will be concluding this year’s Disability and Mental Health Summit on May 26th at Beth El by offering a full slate of free information sessions and the return of our resource fair. But we also want to mention the inclusion of a special session relating to the trauma and mental health concerns commonly faced by our first responders.
Sheila G. Roth, Ph.D., LCSW, EMT will present “Invisible Wounds: The Impact of Trauma on First Responders.” We know that public safety providers routinely witness the emotional and physical pain of others as a part of their jobs. This session will explore the impact of this work through a case scenario and discuss how cumulative events can lead to the experience of vicarious trauma, the ways in which traumatic events are processed differently than non-traumatic events, and how
these invisible wounds play out in daily life. Considerations for self-care and resources will be offered as a part of this session. Dr. Roth is the Manager of the Continuum of Support Program for the City of Pittsburgh Office of Community Health and Safety and a Professor of Social Work in the Masters in Social Work Program at Carlow University. We will also be joined by a member of Pittsburgh Fire to provide a firsthand account of these concerns and issues.
