For individuals who use wheelchairs, these vital devices represent lifelines to independence. They allow their users to access their community, get to work, and take part in daily life. What many people don’t realize, however, is that about half of all wheelchairs break down in the first six months after they are fitted to their user. Furthermore, just like cars, wheelchairs require regular maintenance to continue to get people safely and effectively from one place to another.
That is why I hosted a news conference on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, alongside my colleagues Rep. Kosierowski, Sen. Tartaglione, and Sen. Kearney, to announce that we will be introducing legislation requiring insurance coverage for wheelchair well-visits. Speakers at the event included Matthew Berwick and Samantha Twinning of United Spinal. You can view the news conference here.
