Crosswalk Safety
Our school districts rely on crossing guards to help keep our children safe. Many thanks to these critical public safety employees for their service to our community - they do a great job! These programs are frequently looking for crossing guards. For example, if you are interested in joining Mt. Lebanon, you can apply here to become a substitute Mt. Lebanon crossing guard.
School Bus Safety
School buses transport many students throughout the 42nd District. Keep an eye out for non-traditional vehicles bearing a “school students” sign. Please remember to stop for any school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, unless it's on the other side of a divided highway. Violations could result in a $250 fine, five points on your driving record and a 60-day license suspension. Click here for school bus safety tips from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. There are several other PennDOT safety videos we’d like to share, including:
Safe Walking
The Mt. Lebanon School District is a walking school district. Student safe walking awareness is reviewed annually with the assistance of the Mt. Lebanon Police Department (MLPD). In addition to reinforcing safe walking rules with students at the beginning of the school year, the MLPD has established Safe Walking Routes for each elementary school. Please review these routes with your child throughout the school year. Safe walking maps can be found here.
Volunteer Clearances
Schools often have a variety of programs and chaperone opportunities for parents to participate in. To promote a safe and secure school environment, Act 153 of 2014 requires unpaid school volunteers who will have direct contact with children to obtain background checks. Here are links to clearance portals:
National School Lunch Program
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child-care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day. Children from families with incomes at or below 185% of the poverty level are eligible for
free or reduced lunches. Families can apply online using COMPASS, which also allows Pennsylvanians to apply for social service programs, such as Food Stamps (FS), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Energy Assistance, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), etc. The website is www.compass.state.pa.us or you can also contact your school district for a paper application.
We hope you had an enjoyable summer, and we wish you, your children, and grandchildren much success as they head back to school! Thank you to all the teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals and other staff that have already been hard at work preparing for the new school year.
