dichotomous key for crayfish?

Does anyone have a dichotomous key to help identify non-native crayfish in trade? We are specifically interested in marbled crayfish through a broad key will be useful.

Yes, there is the Crayfish of Missouri by William Pflieger still in print. And the Illinois Natural History survey released one field guide to crayfish of the Midwest by Chris Taylor (2015), and they do have a few invasive species listed, I believe, but can’t remember if they included the marbled crayfish?

There are at least two keys. One from the Missouri department of conservation for species residing west of the Mississippi River by Bob Piper and another from the Illinois natural history survey for species east of the river. Larry Page author. Both are old and probably out of print unless they have been digitized.

One problem here is that all marbled crayfish are going to be females, and most of the keys we use are based on characters of the male gonopods.

My suggestion would be to sex the crayfish. If they’re male, you can already rule out a marbled crayfish. From there, use the figures in the attached manuscript (pages 548-549) to help you. Some of the more prominent characters are the open areola, the single cervical spine, the shape of the annulus ventralis, and the blotchy (marbled) coloration along the sides.

If you are looking for characters to differentiate between P. virginalis and one or more specific other species (i.e., P. clarkii) please let me know and I can whip up a little key.
