Peace in Afghanistan will fail if women’s rights are threatened or erased. Peace in Afghanistan will never be achieved if Afghan women are not included in the peace process. Their security and ours is at stake. In the midst of a worrying escalation in violence in Afghanistan and a wave of targeted killings, thousands of women are trying to have their voices heard. Through these killings, the Taliban keep targeting women journalists, civil society members and health workers. Despite the risks, Afghan women are resisting and do not want a political power that would suppress the rights they have acquired over the last two decades.

But the peace talks with the Taliban are worrisome for the future of women and minorities in Afghanistan. In the latest official encounter between representatives of the Taliban and of the Afghan government in Moscow, only one woman was invited to take part in the talks. As a result, women’s interests do not seem to be taken into account in the discussions. More generally, a meaningful participation of women in peace negotiations has resulted in a better content of the peace agreements and higher implementation rates. The next negotiation meeting will take place in Istanbul at the beginning of April. There is still time to demand a much higher number of women delegates.

100 000 women and girls from 15 provinces of Afghanistan have recently signed a statement to demand a lasting and dignified peace.

Please sign this petition to demonstrate your support to Afghan women and girls. Through this petition, we are asking the international community to make every effort to ensure the meaningful participation of Afghan women at all levels of the peace process and that the gains they have made are preserved and advanced.
