An Ambitious Attainment Goal for NC

Before recently, North Carolina was one of only nine states in the country without a statewide goal for educational attainment. At a time when employers are struggling to find qualified, skilled workers to fill their open positions, it’s clear that we needed a common goal & better alignment across business, education and government to prepare a competitive, 21st century workforce. Though strengthening the talent pipeline will take work across all stages of an education journey, the work of the myFutureNC Commission is a step in the right direction.

Launched last year, the myFutureNC Commission is a group of leaders from business, government, education, nonprofits and more who came together to develop a multi-year plan and a broad-based agenda to make North Carolina’s workforce more competitive, starting with setting an attainment goal. In February, they announced the goal that will guide their continued work: by 2030, 2 million North Carolinians between 25 and 44 will have a high-quality postsecondary degree or credential.

The importance of postsecondary degrees or credentials can’t be understated. According to the News & Observer: “67% of North Carolina jobs require more than just a high school degree, but less than half of our workforce is prepared to take them on. Just 49% of 25- to 44-year-olds — 1.4 million North Carolinians total — have achieved some form of postsecondary education.”

We are encouraged by this ambitious attainment goal & look forward to working with stakeholders across many industry sectors to achieve it. Read the full report from myFutureNC here.

Sincerely,
